The advantages of a CAT tool

The advantages of using a piece of CAT software to translate a source text are many, because a CAT tool actually does much more than simply provide a work environment for translators. The translation software breaks a whole text into segments from one sentence, structuring the text and making it easy for translators to focus their thoughts and translate sentence by sentence. At a segment level however it is possible that some sentences or word groups occur more than once in a text.
In the example below, (taken from the poem ‘Annabel Lee’ by Edgar Alan Poe), the red colored lines are repetitive text.

The CAT tool recognizes that these lines match 100%, and possibly has already filled in the translation of the first occurring sentence to assure consistency in the translation. However, apart from the 100% matching sentences there can also be sentences that are really close to each other, but still differ in some respects. These sentences are called ‘fuzzy matches’. CAT tools can fill them in to improve the productivity of translators, but they need to be amended in order to make sure that they are translated correctly. The image below with an orange background shows the sentences that are close to each other, but still differ in wording (and therefore can have a whole different meaning than the 100% matches).

To ensure the consistency of translations and improve the productivity of translators, all translated segments are stored in a translation memory (TM). This database contains all translations for a particular document or project, and CAT tools will look up the best possible match in the database for each segment. Apart from the TM, translators can also attach a terminology database (TB) to a project. This file can contain terminology for a particular field or industry, offering suggestions when a term occurs in the source document to make sure that the translation fully reflects the correct terminology.

Modern CAT tools already save particular terms or word combinations as a term in their translation memories, making it possible to ensure consistency without a terminology database. In the example of Annabel Lee below, the first occurrence of the ‘term’ ‘Annabel Lee’ will be stored in the translation memory, afterwards it will occur in every sentence containing ‘Annabel Lee’. Hence these terms are highlighted in green.

In short, a CAT tool:

• structures a document by breaking it up into different sentences
• improves productivity by looking up sentences that are close to each other
• enables translators to store their work in a translation memory
• improves consistency by enabling a terminology database for particular terms

Особенности национального рынка CAT-программ

Как и в других странах, в России самая популярная программа памяти переводов — это SDL Trados. В отличие от других стран, среди бюро переводов России очень высока популярность облачных инструментов: Memsource и, с этого года, smartCAT. С другой стороны, гораздо меньше используется memoQ, а такие зрелые и успешные инструменты как XTM, MateCAT и Wordbee вообще не входят в первую десятку.

Выше популярность систем, интересы которых на российском рынке представляет местный партнер.

• «Т-Сервис» становится лучшим в мире
  реселлером SDL по объемам продаж год за годом.
• Atril Deja Vu набрала популярность в 2011-2012 гг., когда их интересы представляла самарская компания All Correct.
• STAR Transit опирается на питерскую компанию STAR Спб.

В РФ небольшая доля у Kilgray memoQ. Любимчики мирового переводческого сообщества Kilgray пробовали открыть российское представительство в 2012 году, но после неудачного первого опыта с наймом директора оставили попытки экспансии на наш рынок. Вместо этого впоследствии они открыли офис в Японии, где потенциал для их бизнеса в несколько раз больше. А XTM, Across, MateCAT и Wordbee практически не посещали местные мероприятия и не инвестировали в развитие в РФ. Они предпочитают продавать российским компаниям, когда те посещают международные конференции.

Их доля на российском рынке невысокая, хотя по совокупному объему бизнеса в мире и Across, и memoQ, и XTM опережают Memsource и smartCAT. Пожалуй, даже вместе взятых.

CafeTran Espresso

WCafeTran Espresso

The software honestly feels like everything OmegaT should have been, but with a few additions. It’s much easier to use than OmegaT, it has more features, and it doesn’t mention technical details more than it should. It’s still somewhat clunky and definitely not perfect from a design perspective, but there’s no such thing in the software world.

What’s great about CafeTran Espresso is that, just like OmegaT, it’s made available for free on all major platforms, including Mac OS, Windows, and Linux. This one size fits all approach works well for beginners who need the versatility to switch from one device to the other, something which happens more often than you might think. 

Overall, CafeTran Espresso is a great tool. I wouldn’t call it revolutionary, but it has its good points, namely the possibility to integrate a built-in web browser to look for terms on various online providers, the possibility to use a server and collaborate with other people, and the fairly easy to understand, bold and colourful icons throughout the interface.

It’s no secret that software like CafeTran Espresso cannot fully show its potential mainly due to the fact that it lives stuck between much bigger, much more powerful software like SDL Trados and much leaner, more intuitive software like SmartCat. This doesn’t mean that CafeTran Espresso is bad software, far from it. You should definitely give it a go.

CafeTran supports all major file formats, including InDesign files and files required for software localisation projects. Their “knowledge base” is a great place to learn more about the software and use it proficiently as a freelance translator. Unlike OmegaT, I could see people using CafeTran Espresso for long-term professional use.

PS: It’s worth noting that CafeTran is quite heavy on your machine. When I use it, the fans on my Mac become very loud and the performance takes a dip very quickly.

How does a CAT tool for translation work?

CAT tool software programs are designed to help translators do their job faster and more efficiently. A CAT tool works by breaking the source text down into smaller segments and storing all the source and translated segments in a database. They also come with a range of editing and quality assurance tools like autosuggest, spellcheck, and more. A computer-assisted translation workflow would usually involve the following steps:

• The translator opens the source text in a CAT program.
• The CAT tool extracts the content that can be translated (source content with images or other non-text elements will not appear as translatables in the user interface).
• The CAT tool splits the text into translation units—normally phrases, sentences, or paragraphs. These units are also known as segments.
• The CAT tool displays the source text field and the translation field side by side, one segment after another.
• The translator types translations into the empty target segments until the translation job is complete.
• Once a translation segment has been completed, the CAT tool saves the source text and its translation together as a pair in a translation memory. The translator can return to this pair at any time to make changes, and the translation memory will update accordingly.
• The CAT tool will recognize identical or similar source-text segments and auto-fill the corresponding translations in the target column, drawing from the translation memory.

How does CAT work?

First, CAT software breaks the source text into smaller units called translation units or segments (TUs for short). Then, the tool creates a translation database storing all the source and translated segments. The CAT search engine allows the translator to view saved segments, to search for segments with similar content and to translate them. With the help of term bases, glossaries, and translation memories, the CAT tool helps the translator ensure that the terminology and writing style of the source file are translated accurately.

The best CAT tools on the market include such features like autosuggest, quality assurance, side-by-side alignment and much more. You can also use a spell checker, manage terms, use specific dictionaries, term databases, text indexers, merge the translation and the source text, manage projects, translation memories, and automate translation work in general. Here’s how CAT software works using Smartcat as an example:

По сравнению с 2015 годом в каталоге выросло количество пользователей всех систем. Но только smartCAT и Transit поднялись в таблице.

smartCAT удалось убедить российского профессиональное сообщество после того как система отделилась от материнской организации ABBYY Language Services и стала независимой. В середине 2016 г. руководитель проекта Иван Смольников оставил пост генерального директора ABBYY LS и начал активную маркетинговую кампанию на бюро переводов, используя привлеченные инвестиции в размере $2,8 млн от фонда RedSeed. Когда крупные переводческие компании России перестали видеть в smartCAT инструмент конкурента, они стали использовать систему на реальных, а не тестовых проектах. Небольшие бюро привлекла финансовая модель системы с бесплатными лицензиями, а также возможность простой и легальной оплаты услуг переводчиков-фрилансеров, не зарегистрированных в качестве ИП (через иностранное юрлицо).

Позиции Transit Nxt выросли за счет эффекта низкой базы и небольшого повышения маркетинговой активности. Star Spb спонсировала две отраслевые конференции в России, начала сотрудничать с вузами. Бюро переводов покупают Transit Nxt не как самостоятельный инструмент, а как технологию под заказчика, когда сотрудничают с бюро переводов STAR Group на субподряде, либо когда выполняют заказы предприятий-пользователей Transit .

Миф № 6. CAT-инструменты неоправданно дороги

Еще одно отчасти оправданное убеждение — то, что CAT-инструменты заоблачно дороги. Для некоторых из них это действительно так. Самая дешевая версия наиболее распространённой настольной «кошки» стоит около 500 долларов. Подписка на одно из наиболее популярных облачных решений обойдется почти в 30 долларов в месяц. Цена, пожалуй, приемлемая, если у вас есть постоянный поток заказов и сбережения. А что, если вы только начинаете карьеру? Или если вы подрабатываете переводами время от времени? Тогда всё уже не так здорово. Как бы то ни было, у вас есть выход (и возможность роста), даже если вы не желаете тратиться на активы с непредсказуемой прибылью. Прошу прощения за саморекламу, но взгляните на Smartcat. Наша платформа бесплатна как для фрилансеров, так и для компаний. Are they really necessary?

CAT tools are designed to facilitate and accelerate the translation process. They are very useful in cases where the translator works on documents of the same topic with repeated phrases and formulas, like legal documents and certificates. They are also useful for translating manuals with technical vocabulary, since once you have translated the word you will have it stored in your Translation Memory and you will be able to look it up. You can import custom glossaries created by the client which ensures a high level of consistency with previous translations done by other professionals.

Unfortunately, the use of CAT tools is not so much a decision of the translator as a requirement of the agency or client. Agencies and clients will often use one or more CAT tools and they will require that the translator works with them. They will usually send the translator an existing TM created by other translators and they will pay less for 100% matches, repetitions and fuzzy matches. The most used CAT Tools in the industry are Trados, Studio 2009 and 2011, MemoQ, Wordfast and Across so you should look into such of these and become well aquainted with them.

Understanding the Results

The segments will be classified by the degree of similarity between the text you have to translate (source text) and the content stored in the TM. So the tool will provide the following results:

100% matches: these are a perfect match, which means that the segment of the source is identical to another segment stored in the TM.

Repetitions: a segment is repeated many times in the document. Once translated, the TM will provide the translation each time the segment appears in the file.

Fuzzy matches: These are partial coincidences. The source segment may coincide in 95% — 99%, 85% — 94%, 75% — 84% or 50% — 74% with a segment stored in the TM.

No match: These are new segments.

How They Work

So, the most important feature of the CAT tool is that it automatically stores the text translated in a translation memory (TM). This is particularly useful when you have a high number of repeated phrases or sentences because the program will automatically provide the sentence translated if it finds a perfect match in the translation memory. It is also good for consistency, as it ensures that specific terms and phrases are translated always in the same way where there are several translators involved.

The CAT tool breaks the source text into segments, usually no longer than a sentence, using punctuation marks to identify where each segment ends. Then, it presents the source segment in a box and provides another box below to enter the translation, which becomes the target segment. Once translated, the source segment is associated to the target segment creating a translation unit. This translation unit is saved in the translation memory. The tool automatically saves the content into the translation memory as the translator advances in the translation. So even though you don’t save your translation, it will still be available for you in the translation memory. This ensures that you will not miss your translation in case outage or accidentally closing the file without saving.

Шесть и более CAT-средств необходимо для субподрядов

Данные в таблице почерпнуты из каталога Translationrating.ru, в котором зарегистрированы 280 компаний. Из них 170 указали инструменты памяти переводов. 60% компаний пользуются одной или двумя программами, четверть владеет несколькими (от 3 до 5).

15% компаний указали десять или более средств памяти переводов в своем распоряжении. Почти все из них выполняют существенный объем переводов на субподрядах иностранных переводческих фирм. Чтобы адаптироваться под различные технологические требования заказчиков, они тестируют все популярные «кошки» и могут закупить доступ к ним на короткое время. Часто лицензии вместе с проектом предоставляет клиент.

На практике в сколько-нибудь серьезном масштабе они пользуются только одним или двумя инструментами. Например, в компании Janus Worldwide, перечислившей 19 инструментов, основными являются SDL Trados и Across. В Неотэке и ЭГО Транслейтинг с 10 «кошками» на складе в ежедневном режиме переводчики работают в Trados и в Memsource.

CAT tools: history, types, examples

Although all CAT tools serve the same purpose — to support and speed up the translation process — there are different types to suit different needs. In particular:

• Some are downloadable desktop programs you install on your computer and others are cloud-based solutions you log into on your web browser so that it’s easy to collaborate with others within the CAT tool.
• Some are paid solutions with licenses based either on usage or user account, while others are free — completely or partially.

Here are some examples of popular CAT tools today:

How do CAT tools work?

CAT tools are essentially editors divided into two sections: one for the original or source language, and another for the translation or target language.

To make the text easier to translate, the CAT tool separates the text into segments — usually sentences — displaying the source on the left and the target on the right as shown below.

After the translator enters and confirms the translation in the target segment, the CAT tool stores it in a translation memory (TM) so that it can be recovered and reused when similar content needs to be translated. When that happens the CAT tool will show similar or identical content for the translator to check and reuse or make changes accordingly. This helps avoid having to retranslate the same parts again and again from scratch.

Similarly, CAT tools allow you to create term bases, or glossaries, where specific words or phrases that regularly come up can be saved for future reference. These term bases can be easily accessed when a term or phrase is repeated in the source text. This ensures consistency and correct use of terminology, and term bases can even be predetermined in the CAT tool to save time on research or to ensure that the translator uses client or brand-specific terminology.

As well as translation memories, most CAT tools provide machine translation as an additional feature. As already mentioned, this is not the primary function of CAT tools, and good translators use machine translation with caution, as another resource, like a dictionary, and not to translate directly. Alternatively, you can use it with a post-editing service, with human editors fixing a machine-translated text — which should not be confused with human translation from beginning to end.

LingoES

У этой программы имеется Portable версия, однако в ней некорректно работали горячие клавиши, и поэтому она была заменена на обычную версию LingoES, которая далее функционировала без проблем.

Как и большинство других утилит в обзоре, LingoES умеет использовать Google Translate для перевода. Возможно, программа на каком-то уровне маскируется под мобильное приложение, или передает текст напрямую на translate.google.com и затем возвращает результат, но факт остается фактом – сервис перевода Google поддерживается. При желании его можно поменять на Microsoft Translate.

Для перевода выделенного текста горячей клавишей необходимо использовать одновременно и клавиатуру и мышку (по умолчанию Ctrl + правая кнопка мыши). Комбинация на самом деле удобная, но после ее использования появляется как окно программы с переводом, так и контекстное меню там где был выделен текст.

Возможен и перевод текста сразу после его выделения мышкой. Получается очень быстро, однако всплывающая подсказка при работе с текстом будет появляться чаще, чем хотелось бы, к тому же любое последующее движение курсора (помимо перевода на подсказку) приводит к тому, что перевод пропадает с экрана.

Если выбрать в опциях перевод буфера обмена, то нажатие Ctrl+C будет также вызывать подсказку с переводом.

What benefits can CAT tool bring to you?

Time

Translation is time-consuming, and CAT tools save time. Glossaries help save time by automatically offering previously-translated terms which have been saved in the database.

Translation memories (TMs) save time by automatically adding translations to untranslated segments when they are the same or similar. Import/Export tools help save time by carefully importing, saving and exporting the source-document formatting for compatibility and other purposes.

Efficiency

Saving time means working becomes more efficient. The translator doesn’t have to worry about the source-file formatting — the CAT tool does it for them. Through «fuzzy search» features, CAT tools can find segments that are not a100% match. This saves a lot of time and effort and helps produce coherent and consistent translations.

Convenience

A CAT tool divides the text to be translated into TUs and presents the segments clearly to make translating easier and faster. Smartcat shows each segment in a box, and the translation is entered in a separate box to the right of the source text. The best CAT tools do a lot more for the translator: they count words, segments and units, analyze text, compare portions of new and pre-translated material, etc., so the translator doesn’t have to.

Control

CAT tools like Smartcat allow more than one translator to work simultaneously on the same project and even the same document. The project manager controls everything within the system without turning to outside project management tools. By giving translators access to CAT tools LSPs can manage large international projects, e.g. Smartcat allows companies to pay all their remote workers in one payment — the system distributes the payment to each translator accordingly.

Utility

A CAT tool doesn’t translate a document. Instead, it gives translators everything they need to translate: automatic machine translation, storing translations in TMs, text navigation, quality checks, translation progress tools and everything under one roof. Smartcat takes this one step further and also has a marketplace where LSPs, translators, and potential customers can find each other.
