Frequently Asked Questions

What is Amazon Mechanical Turk?

Mechanical Turk is a platform created and operated by Amazon for low-skill “human intelligence tasks,” such as identifying pictures, data entry, quick surveys, and more. It is a way for companies to quickly and affordably outsource and crowdsource certain tasks, and a way for individuals to make extra money performing those tasks.

Is Amazon Mechanical Turk legitimate?

Yes, Mechanical Turk is legitimate. The service is owned and operated by Amazon and has hundreds of thousands of users.

Can you make money on Mechanical Turk?

If you’re looking at Mechanical Turk as a potential side hustle, you can make money performing microtasks on the platform. One Side Hustle Nation reader reported earning over $50,000 on the site. Be sure to check the blog for his story. However, most Mechanical Turk tasks pay very little and may not be the best use of your time.

What are some alternatives to Mechanical Turk?

A user of Mechanical Turk can be either a «Worker» (contractor) or a «Requester» (employer). Workers have access to a dashboard that displays three sections: total earnings, HIT status and HIT totals. Workers set their own hours and are not under any obligation to accept any particular task. Amazon classifies the Workers as contractors rather than employees, and refuses to file forms or pay payroll taxes. This is aimed to evade the minimum wage, overtime, and workers compensation. Workers must report their income as self-employment income. In 2013, the average wage for the multiple microtasks assigned, if performed quickly, is about one dollar an hour, with each task averaging a few cents. Workers can have a postal address anywhere in the world. Payment for completing tasks can be redeemed on Amazon.com via gift certificate (gift certificates are the only payment option available to international workers, apart from India) or be later transferred to a Worker’s U.S. bank account.

Requesters can ask that Workers fulfill qualifications before engaging in a task, and they can set up a test in order to verify the qualification. They can also accept or reject the result sent by the Worker, which affects the Worker’s reputation. As of April 2019, Requesters paid Amazon a minimum 20% commission on the price of successfully completed jobs, with increased amounts for additional services. Requesters can use the Amazon Mechanical Turk API to programmatically integrate the results of that work directly into their business processes and systems. When employers set up their job, they must specify

  • how much are they paying for each HIT accomplished,
  • how many workers they want to work on each HIT,
  • maximum time a worker has to work on a single task,
  • how much time the workers have to complete the work,

as well as the specific details about the job they want to be completed.

Location of Turkersedit

Workers have been primarily located in the United States since the platform’s inception with demographics generally similar to the overall Internet population in the US.

In 2010, cash payments for Indian workers were introduced, which gave new and updated results on the demographics of workers, who remained primarily within the United States. The researcher behind these statistics runs a website showing worker demographics, updated hourly. In May 2015, it showed that 80% of workers were located in the United States, with the remaining 20% located elsewhere in the world, most of whom were in India. As of May 2019, it showed that approximately 60% of workers were located in the United States and 40% are located elsewhere in the world; approximately 30% are in India.

Mechanical Turk.

What will be in Amazon Mechanical Turk worker’s dashboard?

Employees have access to a dashboard that displays three sections: Total earnings, HIT status and HIT totals.

Total earnings:

Displays the total earnings a worker has received from the realization of human intelligence tasks, the gains made from bonuses and the sum of both HITs and rewards.

HIT status:

Displays a list of daily activities and the daily income, along with the number of visits that were submitted, approved, rejected or waiting for the given day.

HIT totals:

Displays information about HIT which has been accepted or is in the process (including the percentage of successes that occurred, returned or abandoned and the percentage of jobs that were approved, rejected or pending those presented).

The alpha-Turker

When Mike Naab first learned of MTurk, he “thought it was too good to be true.”

The prospect of stringing together any kind of side income by completing low-paying tasks — $0.05 here, $0.20 there — seemed unrealistic. And for some time, it was: In his first few weeks on the platform, he pulled in less than $2/hour.

Then, he discovered a bustling online metropolis of hardcore Turkers.

They posted in forums with names like MTurk Crowd and Turkernation. They built software tools that automatically alerted them of well-paying HITs with a chirp or chime. They installed browser extensions that tracked hourly rates and optimized workflow.

“I started to learn more about how things worked,” says Naab. “And that’s when the switch really flipped.”

Since 2013, Naab has completed 95k HITs and earned $45k working part-time on MTurk. In a typical 30-day period, he completes around 4k HITs (many of which take just a few seconds) and pulls in $1k.

What 30 days of work part-time on MTurk looks like for Mike Naab, a business consultant from Pennsylvania (The Hustle)

To be sure, this isn’t a big-money side hustle — and he still has to pay taxes on this. But it’s a meaningful supplement to Naab’s daily income.

It’s also relatively passive. Naab Turks during short gaps in his day: A 30-minute lunch break may mean a few $1.25 Stanford studies. A 10-minute lull between meetings is a $2 psychological survey on chocolate. A 30-second stretch could net him $0.08 for a 1-question poll on the effectiveness of candle scents.

“Most of it is just filling in empty in the day — time I’d probably be wasting otherwise,” he says. “If you’re not doing anything anyway, it’s just bonus money.”

One downside of this logic is that it promotes a constant, break-less cycle of work. To maintain a decent wage, Naab must be constantly alert, always tuned in, and willing to spring to action at the “ding!” of a $0.50 HIT.

Another downside is the uneven flow of the work. Some days, Naab might make $50 in a few hours; other days, he’ll only pull in a few bucks.

“I look at it from an hourly rate standpoint, rather than what I make total,” he says. “If a HIT takes 15 minutes and pays $3, that’s a $12 pay rate, which isn’t bad.”

Naab has to constantly run time assessments in his head: A task that pays $0.25 for 1 minute ($15/hr) is better than a task that pays $1 and takes 10 minutes ($6/hr). Anything that pays out at an hourly rate of less than $6 is “sucky.”

Naab’s HITs often work out to a reasonable hourly rate (The Hustle)

In his book, Side Hustle From Home: How To Make Money Online With Amazon Mechanical Turk, Naab enumerates on the many tools and resources he uses:

  • Turkopticon: A site where Turkers rate requesters’ communication, generosity, fairness, and promptness on a scale from 1-5. (Used to filter out or avoid bad actors who populate MTurk.)
  • Turkmaster: A browser extension that finds HITs based on criteria, including pay, and pushes them to you. (Saves time spent looking for tasks, and increases the amount made.)
  • Mmmturkeybacon: An extension that tallies projected earnings for the day.
  • MTurk Crowd, HITs Worth Looking For,  MTurkForum: Forums where Turkers give out tips, compile quality HITs, and discuss bad requesters.

“Most people’s first mistake is they go on there and accept any task they see,” says Naab. “They’ll do these transcriptions — $0.01 to transcribe a whole receipt for Expensify. That’s a terrible ROI.”

Naab prefers surveys, which generally pay $1 or more and don’t require much time. Other tasks require “qualifications” (anything from age/location, to a certain number of completed HITs, to experience with psychological trauma).

A receipt transcription task on MTurk (The Hustle)

But even for a top 1% Turker like Naab, the good stuff has been drying up lately.

“Either there’s not as much work, or there are more workers now,” he says. “It’s harder to catch the good ones, and it’s definitely not as good as it was at its peak.”

The platform, it seems, has grown in popularity — especially among workers in India, where the pay rates are more favorable. Once underground enclaves, the MTurk forums now court thousands of posters from around the world.

Is Amazon Mechanical Turk Safe?

To be fair, Amazon Mechanical Turk has been around for a while. It’s a legit way of making some extra money online. However, how much you earn will depend on how much time you spend completing hits, there are no two ways around that, partner.

You better have a lot of time on your hands to make this worth while, since you’ll be paid pennies. But it’s something that can be started right away and doesn’t require a lot of skills.

At the end of the day, I’m a big believer in multiple streams of income. So I won’t knock your hustle if you decide that it’s still worth giving Amazon Mechanical Turk a try. Sometimes some money is better than no money at all. But you can also try out sites like SurveyJunkie.com, Swagbucks.com and Fusioncash.com as an additional way to extra money that may pay you more for your time. And if you’re serious about making a full time or part time income, then you definitely want to check out My Best Work At Home Recommendation. You have many options either way.

About Amazon Mechanical Turk

What is Amazon Mechanical Turk?

Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) is a marketplace for completion of virtual tasks that requires human intelligence. The Mechanical Turk service gives businesses access to a diverse, on-demand, scalable workforce and gives Workers a selection of thousands of tasks to complete whenever it’s convenient.

Amazon Mechanical Turk was created because we know there are many things human beings do much more effectively than computers, such as identifying objects in a photo or video, performing data de-duplication, transcribing audio recordings, or researching data details. Requester customers are able to send these tasks to the Mechanical Turk workforce. Traditionally, these tasks have been accomplished by hiring a large temporary workforce (which is time consuming, expensive, and difficult to scale) or have gone undone.

Where does the name Mechanical Turk come from?

In 1769, Hungarian nobleman Wolfgang von Kempelen astonished Europe by building a mechanical chess-playing automaton that defeated nearly every opponent it faced. A life-sized wooden mannequin, adorned with a fur-trimmed robe and a turban, Kempelen’s “Turk” was seated behind a cabinet and toured Europe confounding such brilliant challengers as Benjamin Franklin and Napoleon Bonaparte. To persuade skeptical audiences, Kempelen would slide open the cabinet’s doors to reveal the intricate set of gears, cogs and springs that powered his invention. He convinced them that he had built a machine that made decisions using artificial intelligence. What they did not know was the secret behind the Mechanical Turk: a chess master cleverly concealed inside.

What is a HIT?

A Human Intelligence Task, or HIT, is a question that needs an answer. A HIT represents a single, self-contained, virtual task that a Worker can work on, submit an answer, and collect a reward for completing. HITs are created by Requester customers in order to be completed by Worker customers.

Amazon Mechanical Turk Complaints

Well, it’s time to get to the part of the review that you’ve all been waiting for. If you’re anything like me there are already things you read above that you probably don’t like. But we discovered other complaints against Amazon Mechanical Turk you may want to know about. You decide if it’s a deal breaker or not.

You’ll work for pennies

So this is probably the biggest issue for most people. The reality is that most of the HITS available will pay you pennies for your time. You would have to do a lot of hits that may be very time consuming to make any real money! If that’s a deal breaker for you, then you may want to check out sites like SurveyJunkie.com, Swagbucks.com or Fusioncash.com. Better yet, you can check out My Top Work At Home Recommendation if you are serious about making real money online.

Shady Non-paying clients

Some workers have run into requesters that will unfairly reject hits with little to no explanation. So you end up wasting hours of your time and the requester is probably getting free labor. You can contact the requester to ask why you were rejected, but there is no guarantee they will respond.

Limited Payment Options

As mentioned earlier you only have two ways to get your money; direct deposit and amazon gift cards. It would be great if they offered a PayPal and check option as well.

How Do I Get Paid for the Tasks That I Complete on the MTurk Platform?

When you complete a task and the requester approves it, Amazon Mechanical Turk transfers funds for the task to your Mturk account. You can then transfer your earnings to your Amazon Payments Account or to an Amazon.com gift card. You can disburse your earnings to your bank account from your Amazon Payments Account.

Workers outside the United States can transfer their earnings to an Amazon.com gift card. Or, they can transfer to a bank account, depending on their country. Workers are limited to one transfer per calendar day.

If you are a new worker, your money is held until you have been active on Amazon Mechanical Turk for at least 10 days. That starts from the day you submitted your first task or HIT.

Not great, but the best survey site I’ve found so far

I’ve made a decent amount of extra money on Mturk but it’s not steady work and you aren’t always paid fairly. I’ve seen hour-long HITs pay $1.00… Yikes. That should be illegal. However there are often good HITs to be found among the completely unfair ones. I’ve made 530 dollars since I joined in May, which is pretty good for me since I have a day job and don’t always have time to sit at home doing HITs.
A typical day of work is filling out surveys and doing minor tasks for extra cash. The projects (HITs) you’ll be tasked to do vary widely, but they’re mostly surveys. You may rarely talk to management or requesters unless there’s a problem (i.e. they reject your work or your payment doesn’t go through). Workplace culture is just sitting at your computer/device doing surveys and other tasks.
The hardest part of the job is the often unfair pay. It takes a keen eye and good searching skills to find HITs that pay decently. There’s also the fact that having your work rejected can seriously damage your ability to use the platform. Luckily I haven’t had much of a problem with rejections. The most enjoyable part is the flexibility of being able to work from home whenever you want to.

Most of these tasks are pretty simple which is probably why they don’t pay that much. So it doesn’t require any high level of education or skills to work at Amazon Mechanical Turk. This is perfect for anyone that wants to make some cash without much of a learning curve.

Positive BBB

This is for you who can’t touch an online work at home opportunity with a 10 foot pole without first confirming the company’s status with the Better Business Bureau. Well, MTurk is owned by Amazon, so by extension, MTurk’s BBB rating is a B+.

What Kind of Work Can I Do Using Amazon Turk?

Common tasks that you can find on the MTurk marketplace can include identifying objects in an image or video, tagging objects found in an image, audit user-uploaded images or videos, removing duplicate content from business listings, identifying duplicate product listings in a catalog, answering questions/taking surveys, finding specific data elements in legal and government documents, transcribing audio recordings, writing content for websites, translating content or documents, and much more.

Requesters can post any task that can be completed by human beings using a computing device with access to the internet.

The service was initially conceived by Venky Harinarayan in a US patent filed in 2001. Amazon coined the term artificial artificial intelligence for processes outsourcing some parts of a computer program to humans, for those tasks carried out much faster by humans than computers. It is claimed that Jeff Bezos was responsible for the concept that led to Amazon’s Mechanical Turk being developed to realize this process.

The name Mechanical Turk was inspired by «The Turk», an 18th-century chess-playing automaton made by Wolfgang von Kempelen that toured Europe, beating both Napoleon Bonaparte and Benjamin Franklin. It was later revealed that this «machine» was not an automaton at all, but was, in fact, a human chess master hidden in the cabinet beneath the board and controlling the movements of a humanoid dummy. Likewise, the Mechanical Turk online service uses remote human labor hidden behind a computer interface to help employers perform tasks that are not possible using a true machine.

MTurk was launched publicly on November 2, 2005. Following its launch, the Mechanical Turk user base grew quickly. In early- to mid-November 2005, there were tens of thousands of jobs, all of them uploaded to the system by Amazon itself for some of its internal tasks that required human intelligence. HIT types have expanded to include transcribing, rating, image tagging, surveys, and writing.

In March 2007, there were reportedly more than 100,000 workers in over 100 countries. This increased to over 500,000 registered workers from over 190 countries in January 2011. In the same year, Techlist published an interactive map pinpointing the locations of 50,000 of their MTurk workers around the world. By 2018, research had demonstrated that while there were over 100,000 workers available on the platform at any time, only around 2000 were actively working.

Mechanical Turk.

Работу дают на scribie.com.
